Achievements of Proyectos de Casas Saludables

    • In 2006 to 2008 PCS evaluated 150 homes in the area of City Heights, impacting more than 200 residents who learned more about health care within the home and learned their rights as tenants. Nine of these families benefited after receiving rearrangements throughout their home and at the same time achieved better communication between tenants and owners so both parties could further work on improving living conditions.
    • In 2008 the first conference for Health and Housing was held in City Heights for residents from diverse areas throughout San Diego county with an attendance of 180 participants. This conference managed to help residents resolve various problems that affected their housing and they obtained more information on community services and legal resources that could help support them in learning their rights.
    • During the years of 2009 to date, PCS has made four major Leadership Academies and managed to graduate more than 350 residents who have received substantial benefits to knowing their rights as active citizens in their communities. At our graduation ceremony they received recognition from Congresswoman Susan Davis, and Council members Todd Gloria, Tony Young, and Marti Emerald.
    • Over the years we have increased the voice of resident parents, and youth who know more about the problems of their community and understand the challenges we face every day in joining to increase awareness through education and continuous learning. Significantly more are taking advance of their own leadership in significant changes, some parents are now presidents of committees in their children’s schools. Other residents are preparing to take seats in the PAC (Planning Area Committee), Town Council, Parks and Recreation.
    • PCS achieved to be part of the voice of the residents for 18 months in the process of the Healthy Communities Initiative funded by the California Endowment in 14 California Communities. City Heights has a chance for 10 years and achieving the benefits of a healthier community for residents.
    • PCS has worked with organizations such as Walk San Diego in its program HED (Health Equita by Design) support in carrying out the guide for future residents who will become a substantial tool for residents who are involved in making changes to the community.
    • In PCS Committees develop future leaders who make an impact for a better perspective on the kind of life we want in our community, while gaining greater access to decision making for the welfare of all.
    • In this year we had five health workshops that benefit more than 50 residents through education on the use of medicinal herbs to reduce stress and high tension, and how to eat healthier to prevent diabetes and combat asthma.
    • During 2010 and 2011 we continue to move forward with the group of Colina Park residents who do community cleaning every three months. This group has been organized to voice out on which streets will be installed with the new lights approved by PAC. They are now actively participating towards the design that will be implemented for the Chollas Triangle.
